Camping 101

This is a simple list of items that you will need for CampOUT. These are the most important items you should bring. It has been minimized for those people coming a long distance, and also a good list for those who do not want to buy a lot of stuff. There are links to more detailed camping checklist on our camping & scouting links page. You will be off the beaten path, so you should bring as much cash as you think you will need. Bek of tattooheathen.com will be there tattooing & piercing, and we are expecting other merchants.

The basics:
sleeping bag
pillow
air mattress or foam pad
tent
towel
toiletries (please use biodegradable soap)
flashlight
camp chair or stool (chair in a bag)
poncho or raincoat
clothes
eating utensils (cup, bowl and spoon minimum; plate, fork, and knife if room.)
paper plates and cups--if you are not going to bring your own dishes, and have opted for something disposable, please get paper. This way you can burn it when you are done. Anything that can't be burned you must take it off the land yourself!

Fun things if you have room:
football
frisbee
playing cards
drums and other acoustic instruments
toy bag

Tips for finding discount camping gear:
Winter is a good time to find camping gear on sale or in the clearance bin. Try finding essentials at department stores Target, Walmart, Kmart and Meijer's, sporting goods stores like MC Sporting Goods, Dick's, Dunham's, Sports Authority, and SportsMart, outfitters like Cabela's and Gander Mountain, and Army/Navy surplus stores. Garage sales and thrift stores are good places to find used gear, and some colleges have clubs that rent gear. We suggest you try calling or shopping around. Chains like REI and North Face have a wide selection, but are expensive, and you don't need a - 40 degree sleeping bag for July. In Chicago we have found nice brand name sleeping bags marked down to $10. Check out our camping & scouting links for store locators and online shopping.
